Using Wood Excelsior For Taxidermy

In the taxidermy world of lingo you will often hear the term “wrapped body”. What does this actually mean? In today’s modern world of taxidermy most birds, fish and mammals are taxied onto a foam body made out of two part polyurethane foam.  However there are a few taxidermists who still prefer and rely on the old method of wrapping their bodies using wood excelsior. Another common name for wood excelsior is wood wool. Before polyurethane foam became the norm in manikin use for taxidermy, #woodexcelsior was the go to product for producing bodies that would accept a bird or mammal skin.

Always spray your wood excelsior with water prior to wrapping

Make no mistake, those who still choose to use excelsior can produce as good if not a better bird and or mammal body then the foam bodies. There are many blue ribbons today being handed out to taxidermists with wrapped bodies under those skins.

Another huge benefit of wrapped bodies is the cost. You can wrap half a dozen bodies to what it costs for one foam body. Wood excelsior is also very available can be easily purchased from anywhere in the world. You can purchase it in large bales or in small quantities. You will also have the correct body size to your specimen when wrapping bodies using excelsior. You will be able to obtain any position you desire also when building your own bodies.
